Records that electrified us in week 17!

First up is Moodymann’s glorious new album on KDJ. No need to elaborate here - buy now or cry later.

Up next is the 2021 edition of Arp Frique’s ‘Nos Magia’ on our own Rush Hour label, featuring distinguished guests Orlando Julius and Americo Brito. Hot stuff.

Rahaan and DJ Emanuel take on classics by Imagination, Diana Ross and Parlet on their first record for the brand new Yams N Rekkids label - and there’s more coming up!

Recorded on the outskirts of Johannesburg during isolation, ‘Indaba Is’ is a beautiful Brownswood compilation of new work by some of the finest players on the Joburg jazz scene. If you liked ‘New Horizons’ on Afrosynth this one is for you.

Despite originally being released some thirty years ago ‘Pajaros Electricos’ still sounds just as fresh and (post)modern today in combining electric jazz fusion with contemporary Brazilian sounds. Make sure to check it out.

One of this week’s sweetest nuggets is Cultures of Soul’s new double whammy seven by the Christian Harmonizers and the Gospel Travelers, a double A-sider with two divinely sweet gospel funk groovers.

Special attention for the heavy debut album by new Amsterdam jazz outfit Smandem for Super-Sonic Jazz, one of the coolest new joints to emerge this year.

Ulla Straus and Perila create their own fluffy little clouds as Log, coming up with eleven dreamy ambient excursions on appropriately cream-coloured vinyl.

Do check out the fourth release on Ghost Phone, a heavy fourtracker with a sound varying from tripped-out slo-mo R&B to muffled twostep and experimental post-bass.

Last but most certainly not least is Itopia’s crazy rare ‘Sunshine Love’ on Wackies, a rubbery reggae groover that sounds as good as ever.
